Master Pre-Styling: How to Choose the Right Hair Pre-Styler

A practical guide to choosing and applying the right hair pre-styler.

Master Pre-Styling: How to Choose the Right Hair Pre-Styler

A great hairstyle doesn’t start with your finishing product. It starts with the foundation you build beforehand.

Pre-styling involves applying a product to damp hair before blow-drying, diffusing or air-drying. This first step can build volume, create texture, establish direction and make the hair easier to control. Get it right and your finishing product won’t have to work nearly as hard.

If you’re new to the process, start with our guide to How to Prestyle your Hair. If you already understand the basics but aren’t sure which product belongs in your routine, you’re in the right place.

This guide takes a closer look at the different ways to pre-style, including how to choose between Foam Tonic, Salt Spray, Clay Spray and Control Cream.

What Does Pre-Styling Do?

Pre-styling creates the foundation of your hairstyle.

Depending on the product and drying technique, it can help you:

  • Build volume and lift
  • Add texture and grip
  • Establish direction and shape
  • Give fine or flat hair a thicker appearance
  • Enhance curls and waves
  • Reduce frizz
  • Create lightweight control
  • Protect the hair while blow-drying
  • Get better results from your finishing product

The key is choosing a product that creates the right foundation for the finished hairstyle. Not every pre-styler produces the same volume, texture or level of control.

Which Hair Pre-Styler Should You Choose?

Here’s the quick version:

  • For heat protection and lightweight volume: Foam Tonic
  • For loose texture, grip and relaxed volume: Salt Spray
  • For grit, thickness and stronger root lift: Clay Spray
  • For frizz control and curl or wave definition: Control Cream

Your drying method matters too. Blow-drying produces more volume, direction and control. Diffusing helps activate and define curls or waves. Air-drying creates a softer result with more natural movement.

Foam Tonic: For Heat Protection and Lightweight Volume

Foam Tonic is the all-rounder of the pre-styling range. It provides heat protection while helping create lightweight volume, direction and natural control.

Apply Foam Tonic evenly through damp hair before blow-drying. Work it from the roots through to the ends so the product can support the entire hairstyle rather than only controlling the surface.

Foam Tonic is a strong choice when you want to:

  • Protect the hair during blow-drying
  • Create natural volume and shape
  • Smooth the hair without weighing it down
  • Enhance curls and waves
  • Maintain a healthy, natural finish
  • Build a foundation for pomades, powders or creams

Use a Vent Brush when you want smoother flow and controlled direction. Reach for a Quiff Roller when the hairstyle needs more height through the front.

For curly or wavy hair, scrunch Foam Tonic through damp hair before using a diffuser. This helps define the natural pattern while maintaining flexible movement.

Foam Tonic can be used by itself when light control is all you need. If the finished style requires greater hold, follow with Deluxe Pomade, Matte Pomade or Styling Powder.

Salt Spray: For Texture, Grip and Relaxed Volume

Salt Spray adds lightweight texture, grip and volume while preserving a natural finish.

Apply it evenly through towel-dried hair, then choose your drying technique based on the result you want. Blow-drying creates more volume and directional control, while air-drying produces softer waves and a relaxed, lived-in finish.

Salt Spray is ideal when you want to:

  • Add loose, natural-looking texture
  • Create grip before applying a finishing product
  • Build volume without heavy product weight
  • Enhance waves or curls
  • Create throwbacks, quiffs and relaxed pompadours
  • Maintain movement through medium or longer hair

For a casual finish, scrunch or shape the hair with your hands and allow it to air-dry. For more height and control, blow-dry with a Quiff Roller or Vent Brush.

Salt Spray works well by itself, but it can also create the foundation for Featherweight, Clay or Matte Pomade.

Clay Spray: For Grit, Thickness and Flexible Control

Clay Spray adds volume, texture, grit and thickness without the weight of a traditional wax.

Its lightweight formula makes it particularly useful for fine or flat hair. It helps establish a fuller foundation while maintaining the movement and flexibility needed for natural, textured styles.

Choose Clay Spray when you want to:

  • Give fine or flat hair a thicker appearance
  • Add grit and stronger texture
  • Build volume at the roots
  • Create separation and definition
  • Maintain flexible, reworkable control
  • Avoid a heavy or high-shine finish

Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, then spray it evenly through damp hair from roots to ends. Begin with a light application and build gradually. If volume is the main goal, focus additional product around the roots.

Blow-dry the hair into shape to activate the volume, grit and directional control. Use a Vent Brush or Quiff Roller to create lift, or use your fingers for a looser and more textured result.

Clay Spray can be used alone for flexible, low-shine styling. When you want even more lift and matte texture, apply Styling Powder once the hair is completely dry. Clay Spray creates the initial thickness and shape, while Styling Powder adds further root lift and control.

Control Cream: For Frizz Control, Curls and Waves

Control Cream offers a different approach to preparing the hair.

Rather than creating the grit associated with Salt Spray or Clay Spray, Control Cream provides lightweight moisture, frizz control and definition. It is particularly well suited to curls, waves and longer hairstyles that need natural structure without heavy product weight.

Choose Control Cream when you want to:

  • Reduce frizz
  • Enhance curls or waves
  • Add lightweight moisture and structure
  • Preserve natural flow and movement
  • Define longer or looser hairstyles
  • Avoid an overly styled appearance

Start with clean, towel-dried hair. Spread a small amount of Control Cream evenly across both hands before working it through the hair from roots to ends.

Scrunch it through curls or waves to support the natural pattern. Use a diffuser when you want tighter curl definition, or blow-dry wavy hair to establish more flow, volume and pieced-out texture. Control Cream can also be left to air-dry when the goal is a softer, more relaxed result.

Control Cream can be paired with Salt Spray when a loose hairstyle needs additional volume and hold. Salt Spray creates the textured foundation, while Control Cream helps reduce frizz and preserve natural movement.

How to Apply a Hair Pre-Styler

The exact process will depend on the product and hairstyle, but most pre-styling routines follow the same basic steps:

  1. Start with clean, towel-dried hair.
  2. Apply a small amount of your chosen product.
  3. Distribute it evenly from roots to ends.
  4. Use your hands, a brush or a comb to establish direction.
  5. Blow-dry, diffuse or air-dry according to the result you want.
  6. Make sure the hair is completely dry before applying a dry product such as Styling Powder.
  7. Apply a finishing product only if the hairstyle needs more hold, texture, definition or shine.

Start light and build gradually. Too much product at the beginning can add unnecessary weight and make the hair harder to shape.

Can Finishing Products Be Used Before Blow-Drying?

A dedicated pre-styler isn’t your only option. Some finishing products can also be applied to damp hair before blow-drying to create texture, shape or additional control.

The important thing is understanding what the product will contribute to the finished style.

Easy Hold

Easy Hold can be applied to damp hair before blow-drying to build volume, texture and direction.

Its lightweight consistency makes it particularly useful for fine or curly hair, as well as hairstyles that need soft, natural control. Once the hair is dry, add another small amount only if the style needs further definition.

Clay

Clay can be applied before blow-drying when the hairstyle needs stronger shape, texture and hold from the start.

Warm a small amount thoroughly between your palms before working it evenly through the hair. Blow-dry the hair into position, then assess the result before applying any more. Clay provides considerably more control than a lightweight spray or tonic, so it pays to start small.

Texture Cream

Texture Cream can be applied to dry or towel-dried hair before air-drying, blow-drying or diffusing.

Use a diffuser to enhance curls and waves, or a hair dryer when you want more volume and directional control. Its pliable, non-set formula is particularly useful for natural, textured styles that need flexible movement rather than a rigid finish.

Can You Combine Pre-Stylers?

Yes, but every product in the routine should have a clear purpose.

Useful product combinations include:

Avoid layering products simply for the sake of using more. Start with the result you want, then choose the lightest combination that will achieve it.

Master the Foundation

The right pre-styler makes the rest of your styling routine easier.

Choose Foam Tonic for heat protection and lightweight shape, Salt Spray for loose texture and volume, Clay Spray for grit and thickness, or Control Cream for frizz control and enhanced natural texture.

Once the foundation is established, take a look at the hair before reaching for another product. A loose, natural hairstyle may already be finished. A more structured look can then be completed with the pomade, clay, cream or powder that provides the hold and finish you need.
